Weekend of 11th & 12th September

White Water Safety & Rescue / Paddling

North Wales

We have organised both a 'standard' white water safety and rescue course and an 'advanced' white water safety and rescue course. Both will be subsidised for club members. Details of course content are shown below.

Standard Course (12 places)

The course deals with incidents associated with whitewater kayaking and canoeing with an emphasis on simple, low technology solutions to common river emergencies.
Course content includes:
Boat-based rescues
Aggressive & defensive swimming
Throwline use
Harness use
Cinches, stoppers & entrapments

As the course involves boat based rescues on, and swimming in, moving water, all candidates should be confident grade 2/3 paddlers and be prepared for a wet and practical course. Participants must be 16 or over.

Advanced Course (6 places)

Course content includes:
Pins and entrapments
Steep bank access
Casualty transport and evacuation
Technical portage techniques

To do the advanced course you must have completed a standard BCU WWSR course & participants must be 18 or over.

General paddling with training available subject to coach availability

Accommodation

We will be staying in two bunkhouses Bryn-Engan and Moelwyn both at Plas-Y-Brenin, and there will be space for 32 people in total.

The Standard WWS&R and Advanced WWS&R courses are being subsidised by the club, so the cost will be £100 per person for course, accommodation and breakfast.

For those just coming for a paddle the maximum cost will be £30 for accommodation and breakfast.

All will have to provide their own lunch and evening meals. Evening meals can be bought at a local pub or PYB bar.

Weekend of 13th & 14th November

North Wales

Training Weekend

4 star Leader training course

(12 places only)

The course is aimed at paddlers that want a formal qualification to lead their peers in a white water grade 2/3 environment.

The training notes state that candidates for this course should be entirely comfortable on grade 2 water and be able to show evidence of having paddled sections of grade 3 in a competent manner. Examples of grade 2/3 would include Barle, Dart loop and lower Tryweryn. For details of the 4* award follow this link to the BCU website.

There are 12 places and the club proposes to subsidise the course to reduce the cost to members. In most cases we would expect that club membership has been held for at least one year. The cost of the course after subsidy will be posted here shortly.

In order to allocate places fairly we would like interested club members to give a brief description of why they should be given a place. This is not to cause lots of work and if members would prefer to talk about this rather than write it down then please contact Phil.

Please briefly answer the following:

1. What is your current paddling level and what rivers have you paddled?

2. Have you any experience of leading on a river or acting as a second?

3. Why should the club support you – what have you done for the club and what are you willing to do for the club?

Please send your responses to Phil.

Accommodation will be at Tyddyn Bychan bunkhouse near Corwen.
